Douglas G. Cogan
Deputy Director of Social Issues Services,
Institutional Shareholder Services

Doug Cogan is Deputy Director of the Social Issues Service, a division of Institutional Shareholder Services.  In addition to analyzing shareholder proxy issues, Doug is involved in corporate research for ISS’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Analytics Service.

Doug is the author of several books on environmental and energy topics, and a frequent speaker on corporate social responsibility issues.  His 1992 book, The Greenhouse Gambit:  Business and Investment Responses to Climate Change, was one of the first to examine the investment implications of global warming for major industries.  Doug’s recent work for Ceres and the Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR) includes:

  • Corporate Governance and Climate Change:  Making the Connection.  Published in 2003 and 2006, this report uses a 14-point checklist to evaluate how some of the world’s biggest carbon-emitting companies are factoring climate change in their business strategies and governance practices.
     
  • Unexamined Risk:  Published in 2004 and 2006, this report examines how top U.S. mutual funds are voting their proxies on climate change shareholder resolutions.
     
  • Investor Guide to Climate Risk:  This 2004 report is an action plan and resource guide for plan sponsors, fund managers and corporations.

At present, Doug is preparing two new reports for Ceres and INCR addressing the climate governance responses of the investment banking and insurance industries, to be published in 2007.
